Subsidence Monitoring

Case Study - Soil Instruments

Background

A new tunnel was required in a small town in England. It would pass beneath much of the town including many private buildings.

Soil Instruments provide equipment that measures minute movements, invisible to the naked eye which could indicate subsidence.

The Problems

The main problem was that tunneling could cause subsidence which could result in extremely expensive claims against the developers by the owners of the property near the new tunnel.

Using Soil instruments' measuring equipment would provide early warning of any movement so that damaging subsidence could be avoided. However, given the number of properties that could be affected, a manually inspected or hardwired solution was impractical.

The Solution

In partnership with Wyless, small radio transmitting tilt and crack meters were deployed. These required no cabling and could be used in sensitive and/or inaccessible locations.

The meters communicated every few minutes with a radio logger nearby. This logger was interrogated every 24 hours over our network using a GSM/GPRS modem. The data was then received on a computer running Net-Site software located at offices in a neighbouring town.

The Wyless managed network delivered robust and reliable connectivity in remote areas, and the Wyless Management Platform enabled the monitoring capability to be extended to the connectivity itself, as well as the subsidence.

The Result

The result was a real-time, early warning system for minute movement at a wide range of remote and inaccessible at-risk locations during the tunneling project.
