Case Study - Westcotec and Wyless:
Intelligent Road Signs

Background

According to the UK Department of Transport, between 22% and 32% of road accidents have excessive speed as a cause of the accident.

Westcotec is a UK-based provider of vehicle-activated signs which have been shown to reduce speeding more effectively than traditional signs.

The Problem

For the best results, interactive signs need to be network connected so that they can be controlled remotely. This allows operators to change the messaging, manage the triggers that result in display and update firmware. They also need to be moved easily from one location to another and are increasingly vehicle-mounted.

The problem is that connecting devices using wires is impractical in some locations and impossible in others. Doing so effectively imobilises the device.

The Solution

The Wyless Network provided the coverage Westcott needed as well as the two-way communication, the management tools and a SIM that could be activated when provisioning. We helped liberate the signs from the constraints of a hard wired solution.

The Result

The result is mobile, intelligent road signs which are managed remotely; that communicate two ways and of course ... safer roads.

"Signs which respond to or interact with drivers have shown to reduce speeding significantly at hazardous sites within speed limit areas.

The use of these types of signs recognises that drivers will make sensible decisions on their speed if given information on their behaviour at the time.
